When should I become alert about myself or someone I care for, about PCOS?

Whenever periods start getting irregular! That’s reason enough to see a doctor because, the changes in several hormones are reflected in the menstrual abnormalities. One or 2 periods being irregular in a year is common but if you have less than 9 periods in a year it is a sign of irregularity. While the irregular periods themselves do not do any harm, the underlying cause may!

In fact PCOS affects teenage girls too. The age of onset of PCOS is most often just around the age of first menstruation (menarche). However, clinical recognition of the syndrome may be delayed by failure of the patient to become concerned by irregular menses, hirsutism, or other symptoms. Sometimes the irregular periods that occur as part of normal physiologic maturation during the 2 years after menarche confound the irregularity caused PCOS at this age.
